Michigan Nightlight: New, Improved

Detroit Achievement Academy

While remaining true to our mission to provide solutions, news and inspiration for those working to impact the lives of Michigan kids, Michigan Nightlight is pleased to unveil a new, enhanced format and other site improvements.
While remaining true to our mission to provide solutions, news and inspiration for those working to impact the lives of Michigan kids, Michigan Nightlight is pleased to unveil a new, enhanced format and other site improvements.

After using a Q&A structure for profiles during our first two years, we’re moving to a narrative style, in the form of Featured Profiles, where we’ll dive deeper into the people, programs, concepts, and models that are working to create systemic change for Michigan’s children.

Along with weekly profiles, you’ll find special reports and features that delve more thoroughly into subjects that matter to those working on kids’ issues in Michigan. And, every week, you’ll still find a new Bright Ideas story – just in a different place (lower, right column).

Aesthetically, we look a little different, and a little snazzier, too.

So, take a look. Explore the content. Subscribe (it’s easy). And share the news with your colleagues.

Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. If you're on Twitter, please join our monthly Twitter chat. The second Tuesday of every month, we partner with Hay There Social Media, ChalkFly, and 826 Michigan to host a chat about Michigan Kids. Find us at #MiYouth.

Here’s to a packed editorial line-up and prosperous 2014 for Michigan kids. Thanks for reading and thanks for caring.

Can systemic racism impact infant mortality?

Even when controlling for poverty, education level, and tobacco use of a mother, maternal and infant health outcomes are far worse for minority populations than European-American women. What's causing the continued disparities? And what can West Michigan do to ensure all babies born here have the best chance of reaching their potential? Zinta Aistars reports on Strong Beginnings, one local program working to give all families a fair start.

Company Supports 4th Grade Field Trips to Lake Michigan

Parents working more than one job or odd hours, a lack of funds, and no transportation often prevent kids from experiencing one of Michigan’s incredible natural resources. For the majority of west side Grand Rapids elementary school kids, Lake Michigan is sadly out of reach. OST has teamed up with Grand Rapids Public Schools to give fourth-graders at west side schools the opportunity to experience the big lake firsthand.
